When specifically authorized by the Chief of Police, Class Two Special Law Enforcement Officers are authorized to exercise full police powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer.

  • The Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II (SLEO) is a part time member of the Police Department.
  • The SLEO Class II may be scheduled for not more than twenty (20) hours per week to provide public safety and law enforcement services to a public entity.
  • Special Law Enforcement Officers maintain order at public gatherings by using crowd control techniques.
  • They may regulate and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic to assure safe and rapid traffic movement.
  • Officers of this class shall be authorized to exercise full powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer.
  • The use of a firearm by SLEO Class II officers may be authorized only after the officer has been fully certified as successfully completing training as prescribed by the Police Training Commission.
  • Conducts vehicle and foot patrol
  • Enforces Criminal Laws, Traffic laws and City Ordinances

  • Must be a citizen of the United States;
  • Must be a resident of the State of New Jersey;
  • Must have a valid New Jersey driver’s license;
  • Must a High School Diploma or Equivalency certificate;
  • Must be sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System of New Jersey as to his eligibility for membership in the retirement system;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and not over 35 at the completion of the program (For municipal police officers)
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently;
  • Must be of good moral character, and have not been convicted of any criminal offense.

Applicants must be enrolled in college.

A Class 2 Police Officer is required to complete a Police Training Commission approved Class 2 Police Academy.

The Class 2 Police Academy recruits will be trained in physical fitness, criminal law, patrol concepts, firearms, vehicle operations, defensive tactics, handcuffing, OC spray, arrest search and seizure to name a few. They have similar powers to that of a full-time police officers.
