Description

 All interested applicants must submit their application, and any other applicable documents, to the Civil Service Department (46 North Avenue Tallmadge, Ohio 44278) no later than 12:00 pm on October 9th, 2024.  Questions regarding the position should be directed to Capt. ENTRY-LEVEL

ENTRY-LEVEL TESTING

Individuals interested in the entry-level application process must complete and turn in an application as stated above.  Individuals must take and pass the Frontline National Law Enforcement Exam and the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) through the National Testing Network (https://nationaltestingnetwork.com).  Individuals receiving a failing score will no longer be considered.

After receiving a passing score through the National Testing Network, applicants must pass a physical agility test (Date, Time and Location to be set).  The physical agility test will consist of three events: 1.5 mile run, sit ups in a minute, and push ups in a minute.  A minimum combined score in each event of seven (7) must be obtained.  Scoring in the “automatic failure” range of any event will cause the candidate to be ineligible for hire.  Scoring ranges for each event can be found here.  The physical agility test is a pass/fail event. 

ENTRY-LEVEL RANKING

Rankings will be determined by the score received from the National Testing Network.  Only applicants who pass the physical agility test will be considered.

      ENTRY-LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS

  • S. Citizenship
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to read and write the English language
  • Must possess high school diploma or GED
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years old and less than 35 years old at time of appointment
  • Other qualifications as listed in the posting, including but not limited to successfully complete an in-depth background investigation, interview, polygraph, psychological, physical agility and medical examinations

 

LATERAL-ENTRY

LATERAL-ENTRY TESTING

Individuals interested in the lateral-entry application process must complete and turn in an application as stated above, along with any college transcripts, diplomas, and military discharge papers to receive the applicable points as stated below.  Individuals must hold a valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) Certification.  To be eligible as a lateral-entry candidate, applicant must be currently working as a sworn officer in the State of Ohio or have worked as a sworn officer in the State of Ohio within the last 12 months.

  • 1 point per year of full-time law enforcement experience.
  • ½ point per year of part-time law enforcement experience.
  • 2 points for military service
  • 2 points for a bachelor’s degree
  • 2 points for a master’s degree

 Only applicants who pass the physical agility test will be considered.

PATROL OFFICER JOB DUTIES

Under general direction, the Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling the streets, conducting investigations and responding to citizen complaints. Tallmadge patrol officers are responsible for various tasks, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patrol the City on foot and in car
  • Respond to dispatched calls
  • Investigate criminal activity
  • Assist injured individuals
  • Conduct interviews
  • Preserve, photograph, document, and process crime scenes
  • Enforce local and state criminal laws
  • Subdue and disarm suspects
  • Arrest suspects
  • Processes arrested individuals
  • Incarcerate or transport suspects to jail
  • Attend all court hearings and related meetings
  • Represent the department at public meetings
  • Inform citizens of department services
  • Work cooperatively with community groups
  • Respond to citizen concerns and resolves conflicts
  • Attend meetings and serves on temporary committees, as requested
  • Maintain and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training courses, and in-service training sessions
  • Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested

PATROL OFFICER SALARY

$32.95 (starting), $34.19 (after 6 months), $36.37 (after 1 year), $37.10 (after 2 years), $39.94 (after 3 years), $40.37 (after 3.5 years)
