Under general supervision to perform work at full performance in the implementation and evaluation of religious programs and services for the inmate population. Conducts interdenominational religious services and activities. Assists the facility staff and authorities in maintaining morale by attending to the spiritual needs of the inmates. May work weekends and evenings. Services in a staff specialist role to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations relating to religious programs. This position is required to meet ACA Standards. The Assistant Chaplain assures equal status and protection of all religions. This position performs the full range of specialized tasks relating to religious function to include analysis and comprehension of program/services regulation. Reports on religious program status staff. This employee may exercise independent judgement and latitude in the work performed. Performs crisis intervention counseling, corresponds with families and agencies regarding inmate needs. Interviews inmates upon admission to an institution to obtain personal and case history data. Distributes religious literature to inmates. This position requires direct inmate contact. Performs related work as related. This position reports to the CPS Sr./Chaplain.
- In accordance with SPB 3088 effective 10/7/23, $5000 will be added to the minimum starting rate of pay for all classifications within a Critical Vacancy Pay Supplemental Facility. Critical Vacancy Pay Facilities: Huttonsville Correctional Center and Jail, Mount Olive Correctional Complex and Jail, Western Regional Jail and Corrections Facility, Northern Correctional Facility (including Ohio County Correctional Center), Northern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, Chick Buckbee Juvenile Center, Vicki Douglas Juvenile Center, Potomac Highlands Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, and Eastern Regional Jail and Corrections Facility (including Martinsburg Correctional Center) (SPB 3088).
- Employees in this classification shall receive an annual base building pay differential each fiscal year of $250 after completing one year of service.
- If an employee is hired into a Critical Vacancy Pay Facility (CVPF) and leaves the facility, the additional pay differential of $5,000 shall be removed from their salary, unless transferring to another CVPF.

Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, corrections, social work or related behavioral or social science field.
OR
Substitution: Additional full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as described below may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of required training.
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in a corrections, probation/parole, law enforcement, social work, recreation, religion or related behavioral or social science field.
OR
Substitution: Graduate coursework from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, corrections, social work or related behavioral or social science field may substitute for the required experience at the rate of fifteen (15) semester hours of training for every one (1) year of experience.
