Typical Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct in-depth client interviews and home visits to assess strengths, needs, and develop individualized service plans.
  • Provide case management for foster care, adoption, child and adult protective services.
  • Testify in court on matters like custody, protective services, and guardianship.
  • Refer clients to community resources and monitor the effectiveness of services rendered.
  • Lead training sessions for foster and adoptive parents.
  • Respond to crisis calls including CPS and APS hotlines.
  • Collaborate with schools, courts, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care.
  • Maintain accurate case records and documentation using systems like OASIS and PeerPlace.
The purpose of the class is to perform responsible and highly complex professional duties to provide a variety of services to eligible customers to improve their ability to function in society. Duties involve direct intervention with individuals with complex problems in one or more areas such as family services, adoption, adult services, and child welfare services. This class works under general supervision of the assigned Family Services Supervisor independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Gerontology, Sociology, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or related field of study.
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) year of full-time equivalent experience in a family engagement; child development, elderly or disabled fields of work, or family-focused social work or closely related experiences.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
  • May require State certification if assigned to the Foster Care Unit.
Additional Requirements
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
